MACKA DIAMOND
Charmaine Munroe, now known to the world as Macka Charmaine
Diamond, was born in Kingston, Jamaica and grew up in
St Catherine. She attended Holy Childhood High School
but even then her focus was more on becoming an
Entertainer than on her studies.
The influence of music was around Charmaine from an
early age. Her father, Phillip Munroe was a record
producer who not only worked with some of the greats,
but were close friends with them; including Gregory
Isaacs, King Jammy’s and Reggae Music’s dynamite duo
Sly & and Robbie.
It was after hearing Artistes such as Sister Nancy (aka
Mama Nancy, a female deejay trailblazer), that she
decided she too was going to become an Artiste.
Her early influence came from female Artistes who were
big at the time; including Mama Nancy, Lady Ann, Lady
Junie and Lady G. She then decided to call herself Lady
Charm, but after the making of her first record, ‘Don Girl’
(an answer version to Major Mackerel’s ‘Don Man’), the
producer insisted that the song be released under the
name, Lady Mackerel.
‘Don Girl’ proved to be a hit and she went on to record for
Sound System champions; Stone Love, King Tubby’s
Kingston 11 label and in various combinations including
live performances and recordings with Captain Barkey
and Wicker Man.
In 2003 she changed her name to Macka Diamond
– along with the new name; came a different and
even more aggressive lyrical approach.
As Macka Diamond a slew of hits ensued including;
Tek Con, Bun Him, Done Already, Hoola Hoop,
Lexus an Benz, DyeDye and Spanish hit ‘Play Tune’.
This versatile female Entertainer, Author and Actress
has walked away with one of Reggae/Dancehall
Music’s most coveted awards: Female DJ of the
Year; on not one, but three occasions, back-to-
back and numerous other music awards..
Macka Diamond is not only and artiste but also an
Author. She has released The dancehall novel;
entitled BUN HIM, from her mega hit single of the
same name. The novel became the number one
selling novel in Jamaica in 2007 and is still being
sought after worldwide today. To the pleasure of
her fans Macka Diamond released her sophomore
novel; The Real Gangster’s Wife in February of 2010.
Macka Diamond has also solidified herself as a
soca Artiste, with soca singles as well collaborations
with soca Artiste Patrice Roberts (from Machel
Montano’s camp), Fay-Ann Lyons and Denise
Belfont.
Macka Diamond has performed on
stages such as Madison Square
Gardens, Hasley Crawford
Stadium, Reggae Sumfest and had
sold out solo concerts in Costa Rica
in January 2020. She has extended
her repertoire of accomplishments
to include acting; starring in the full
length Caribbean Movie,
Redemption of Paradise and
appearing in the popular
Jamaican soap-opera Royal Palm
Estates.
